Two fox kits with mange

Some of you may have noticed two young foxes near Schoharie Turnpike and the Duane Lake/W Duane Lake Rd area. They are living under the shed of a nearby lake resident and appear to have mange. The resident is working with a wildlife rehabilitation service to treat them and, if needed, safely relocate them.

Because mange makes it hard for the fox kits to regulate their body temperature, you may see them lying on dark surfaces to stay warm. The disease is painful, but very treatable if caught early.

For now, the plan is to feed them for a few days and then add medication to their food, provided by the wildlife rehabilitation service. Please avoid feeding them so they learn to come to one reliable food source. This will help ensure they get the treatment they need.
